My Summary of the Article:

The art form has been used in several cultures around the world. The first known mosaic from the 3rd millennium BC was made up of ivory, shells and stones is located in a Mesopotamian temple. this mosaic is more of a decorative abstract piece whereas classical artists chose to take a different approach using their mosaics to create images, patterns and motifs.

After the Renaissance mosaics were used to decorate floors, ceilings and even to depict saints in transcendent portraits or other religious figures. Mosaics were also used throughout other cultures and ages, such as early Islamic architecture, where they featured bright colours, geometric forms appearing on both the inside and outside of buildings.
